Going to be doing a new build sooner rather than later since my PC is still on Sandy Bridge and slowly dying. I was planning on going Intel for my next computer, but due to the fact that Intel chips seem to made of a mix of gold and diamond when it comes to prices, I was wondering if anyone had experience with AMD’s Ryzen chips yet. Any input is appreciated.

If its anything like The AMD Bulldozer processors before it then it will be awesome.

They are good all rounders if you pair it with a decent motherboard, but I suggest holding off a bit since AMD is due to announce their Ryzen 3 line if you dont plan on doing anything intensive. Ryzen 5 currently is a great replacement for a FX8350 level build in terms of pricing.

I was looking at a Ryzen 5 1500x and an Asus board. As much as I’d like a 1600x or a i5-7600k, I don’t know if the $60-$110 difference (when not on sale) increase in price would really be noticeable to me in gaming.

Strong multithreaded performance, weaker single thread performance (so worse for gaming than Intel in most cases). Weird memory stuff:

So so overclocking.

Not a bad chip to get though, a very strong choice at the value end of the market.

I’m waiting to see what Coffeelake looks like before I take the plunge on a new system though (my 2500k system is a bit long in the tooth at this point)

Good luck getting a midpriced graphics card. Prices are skyrocketing because miners are buying them up to mine Ethereum.

Rizen looks really good to me. Good all-around CPU. If I were looking to build this year I would wait for Raven Ridge (the new Ryzen APU) to be released.

Huh, didn’t know about that memory issue.

Yeah, Coffeelake seems like it’ll be wise to wait for at this point. I’m also running a 2500k, and while it’s still decent enough, I’d like to futureproof a little.

Yeah, I know... prices are at least $100 CAD higher than they were when I got a new card three years ago.

A 1500x/1600x would be perfect, but board selection is the real question. Plus DDR4 isnt going to get any cheaper for the next year sooo

Yeah... if prices ever drop. Seems like waiting six months to build is my best plan.

I’m waiting until end of the year, early next to replace my Bulldozer rig. A mixture of wanting to wait for the inevitable 2nd gen chips like I did with FX, and not really liking the C6 Hero. Plus DDR4 and NVME pricing and all.

But at the same time, a GPU upgrade is tempting too.

Waiting for gen-2 seems like a smart plan. I’ll be doing a GPU upgrade, too, but man are they expensive right now.

They look very good value like way back when the Athlon 64 came out. I like Linus’s review. Good summary and benchmarks.

I have a GTX 760 at the moment. I’ll either upgrade that to a 1060, 1070, or whatever AMD is launching at the end of the month, price depending.

I just upgraded from a GTX 580 to a 1070, and it’s fantastic!

I’m running a 4770k, was thinking about the Ryzen for 2x the threads. Gaming performance in single thread advantage for Intel is so low as to be laughable.

Good luck on the 1060/1070. They are hard to find.

I know... Newegg didn’t even have any EVGA 1070s listed.

The best bet is to go to your local Best Buy or small computer store. They often won’t have them listed as in stock but actually have them. Also the 1080 (non-Ti) while more expensive it typically in stock. People like me are buying every 1060/1070 that they can get their hands on. I go once every two weeks and buy out every store within 100 miles.

You a crypto miner? I got real big into it back in 2013/14 but liquidated when the bottom fell out of the market when the scrypt ASICs were released. Started doing ether mining again recently.

Yep. I just got into ether mining. It is a fun side project. My day job pays enough for me to cover the upfront costs so if the bottom falls out I’m not too worried. The gains go into my brokerage account so hopefully it will help accelerate early retirement.

Yeah, I had a bunch of risers and fans left over from the last time I did this so a trip to my local MicroCenter and I had what I needed to start again. Using 6GB 1060 cards because they offer a pretty good performance/price/watt combo.

I’m in the same boat, day job pays the bills and let’s me build these out of my fun money account. Last time when it collapsed I had enough sold surplus hardware and built a killer server and workstation out of the left overs all at zero cost to me ;)
